Yes, I think that's a very astute observation of how congressional politics works. Not that you'd ever know it by watching the news, the media is as complicit as the politicians in perpetuating this myth that politics is anything other than a spectator sport.

I would add to what you say, though, with the thought that majority control is a positive thing if the President and the majority party are in opposition. In this scenario, both parties would benefit massively from a productive outcome. For at least two years of the Clinton administration the GOP had quite a comfortable hold on Congress, and the results were very fruitful.

I think the GOP will come back strong in 2010, but in 2012 I don't honestly see how anyone could challenge Obama, the candidates are just weak. I supported Romney in 2008, but the more I see of him the less I trust him. The other week he went on a rant against big Business insiders (said pot to kettle). Only hope for 2012 is for an outsider like Obama to rise up.

I think that perfectly describes what is happening right now, but I just feel sick about letting the GOP back in after everything they've done.

I think the Democrats have managed to do pretty well considering this "small party" resistance you describe, so hopefully they can keep that going. I would rather take my chances against a GOP minority than actually work with them. Another seat or two for the Dems in the Senate and the GOP won't be able to have any effect.
