another example, both states voted Democrat in 2001 while Bush was sitting pretty on a post 9/11 80% approval rating, which clearly was not a referendum on what people though of him. On top of this the Republicans went on to win 2002 comfortably, so clearly they have absolutely no relevance to anything. as a republican I am gutted that we lost the national races yesterday that actually matter.

I think what you're saying is that this portrayal of Obama in the media has created the impression that he is an influential, charismatic miracle worker who should be able to walk in and win any election for anyone.

Really I think this is just an unrealistic hype that is completely disconnected from how politics works. Regardless, this is not at all relevant to his policies.

Historically, these elections have never been a referendum on the President, nor an even vaguely accurate predictor of future electoral prospects. I don't think we should be thinking any different this year just because we think we have Batman in the white house.

The only reason CNN does is because more people will tune in to watch if they make it sound more important than it actually is.

Good points, but I think the angle the media is getting at is that we should be expecting more from Obama. It's not enough simply to match up to his predecessors, the entire world expects miracles.
